Today I would like to devote a post to the Pomodoro Technique that has helped me beat procrastination. For those of you who don't know what it is I'll briefly explain: The Pomodoro Technique is a time-management method that works with a timer. You work on a task for 25 minutes. When the timer goes off, you take a break for 5 minutes. Every 4 Pomodoro's you take a longer break for about 20-30 minutes. According to the website, the Pomodoro Technique is unique for the following 4 reasons:
1. WORK WITH TIME - NOT AGAINST IT
2. ELIMINATE BURNOUT
3. MANAGE DISTRACTIONS
4. CREATE A BETTER WORK / LIFE BALANCE
For more information on this method watch the video below, go to pomodorotechnique.com or just Google away!
So now that I've put into words what the Pomodoro Technique is for, I want to tell you what it did for me and how it helped me be more efficient and succesful in life.
1. It made me more aware of time
25 minutes are nothing. It may sound like a long time but it's not. Before you know it, your timer beeps and you take a quick break. The good thing is that it works knowing you 'only' have to work for 25 minutes continuously.
2. It forced me to think in priorities
There are so many things one can do but there is only so much time to do things in a day. If you think about what you really need to accomplish on this day and make a list of these activities, it makes it easier to do the boring tasks first because the faster you complete these, the more time you'll have to spend on things you actually love!
3. It made me want to work harder
Nobody likes unfinished business. Especially when you know that you will have to finish these things eventually. Better do it now. Seeing that you can cross off activities on your list one by one works motivating and will make you feel more productive and pleased with yourself. Also, doing fun stuff is even more fun when you don't have to think about that essay you need to hand in or those household chores that won't be done by the garden gnomes.
Mar's Verdict
I know I am not the most productive student but I have found that whenever I work with the Pomodoro Technique it makes me actually do my work before disappearing into a good book or movie. I reccommend trying out this technique as it gives you a better sense of time and the priorities you set in your life which makes it easier for you to get things done faster and with better results!
